Contrary to popular belief, your car is not a safe haven during flood. In fact, in the United States, almost 60% of all flood-related deaths are found inside cars.

This is because just one foot (30 cm) of flooded water washes your car into a larger body of water where you and your car can easily drown. If this sounds like a scary situation, it is.

But there are things you can do to survive. For starters, if your car is still in service, you need to quickly raise it to a higher level. However, once your car has started to flood, you must abandon it.

If you have not been able to leave it and notice that your car is sinking quickly underwater, you have about a minute to react. The SWO protocol is useful here: the seat belts are off, the window is open (or broken), outside.

How effective is this SWO protocol? What other measures can you take if your car sinks quickly? WWhat can you do if your car is completely submerged? Are there any tools you can carry in your car to help with such emergencies? This video answers all these and many other questions.
