Lucy Hale’s easy skin care and beauty routine

I would like to turn a little to makeup. You have been Almai’s global ambassador for just over a year. What would you say is the best makeup trick you’ve learned since you started working with the brand?

I don’t know if this is really a tip or a trick in itself … Rather, only I have formed a deeper assessment of clean, hypoallergenic makeup. I’ve been so happy to work with really amazing makeup artists throughout my career, but one amazing thing about Almay is realizing how much of a difference these products can make to my skin, especially if they’re prone to acne. Almay was actually founded by a dermatologist — he created the whole line for his wife, who had breakthrough-prone skin that I thought was really, really sweet. I was like, this is my dream man!

[Laughs] Seriously!

I need someone to do this for me! Overall, working with Almay really changed my approach to beauty and makeup. For me, the fewer ingredients there are in a product, the better. I love this Almai too was the first brand to voluntarily include ingredients in its packaging. They have nothing to hide, so transparency has always been there. Not to mention that all their makeup is aimed at people with acne-prone skin, but the products are still amazing! They don’t sacrifice color or pigment, and makeup is still really fun.

All right, get ready. If you had to choose your three favorite Almay products of all time, what would they be and why?

Oh, let’s see. Well, they have this line of lipsticks called Lip Vibes, and they have them in many, many colors, but there’s a shade called Treat yourself– it’s red, but it also has a little pink in it and it has become my signed red lip color. Then they have a spiral in a blue tube called Length and lift ($ 7) and is very good. I’m really picky about mascaras and brushes, and that just has the perfect brush. And then, they have the All-day intensive gel eyeliner ($ 8), which really stays in place. They are great for sensitive eyes and I mean, I’m not usually a big eyeliner, but I like to use it to surround my upper waterline. They have this really beautiful brown color called Deep Chestnut. So these are my favorites right now, but they’re always coming up with new fun stuff.

You mentioned earlier how fun Almai makeup is and it seems that you generally have so much fun with beauty. You are never afraid to try a new hair color or makeup, which for many of us can be scary or intimidating. Where does this fearlessness come from?

Well, it’s very nice of you to say, because I often don’t feel fearless enough, so it’s nice to hear it. I do not know! I have always appreciated the makeup and beauty that I think really comes from my grandmother. She wore this iconic red lipstick and would let me play with her makeup. I think growing up as an actress is a huge part of that. In general, I would live in my make-up and hair trailer and I got along great with all the mowers and make-up artists I worked with. I think having fun with beauty and trying new things has become a really beautiful way to express myself. I think in the end it is – I’m very bored with many things in my life, but with makeup there are constant ways to try to do new things. It’s almost like trying a new identity, because in my daily life I keep it quite simple. I will not spend an hour and a half preparing. But if I have a character for a movie or a show or I do an event, it’s almost like I’m choosing who I want to be. Like, what kind of girl do i want to be tonight? It’s just fun! There are no right or wrong answers.

You’re right – we don’t need to be taken so seriously. Hmm, good. What is one thing in your beauty routine that would surprise people?

Oh, wow. My God. Maybe I’m not full of surprises. Um, let’s see. Oh! Well, I’ve already talked about my eyebrows, but I’m literally not doing anything to them at this point. I don’t see anyone pinching them and I probably only prune them twice a year. I don’t know – some people may not be so surprised by this. But what else is surprising? I don’t know … I guess I’m not a mystery girl! [Laughs]

No, that’s good! I recently spoke with Emilia Clarke – who also has amazing eyebrows – about the same series, and she said essentially the same thing. The secret is actually just to do nothing.

Exactly! But oh! I just thought of another good secret: me do use eyelash serum.

Every night. I swear to that and it really helps keep my lashes healthy. I constantly have to wear false eyelashes or mascara when I work every day, and that keeps them really strong, and what I’ve found doesn’t make your crazy people go crazy. That really makes them, really long.
