A new sunflower-like solar panel tracks the sun for maximum energy

You may have seen them around. In fact, they are quite difficult to miss. Based in the Boston SmartFlower Solar creates smart flowers powered by solar energy who follow the sun to generate more energy.

The installations are 16 feet (5 meters) high, open and closed depending on the path of the sun and generate about 5000 kWh of power per year. The systems produce up to 40 percent more energy than traditional solar panels.

Even better, they come with their own battery source. As early as September 2019, SmartFlower Solar debuted its new integrated battery storage system Smartflower + Plus makes these installations even more flexible. SmartFlower Solar has partnered with NEC Energy Solutions, which supplies Smartflower + Plus batteries to enable customers to produce and store clean, reliable energy, whether plugged in or offline.

“Solar companies and installers will now be able to provide their customers with the most intelligent and attractive two-axis solar tracking and energy storage system in the industry. With the growing demand for solar energy and energy storage, the ease of installing Smartflower + Plus will change the game for the industry, “said then-CEO of SmartFlower Solar Jim Gordon.

These batteries are viable at temperature extremes (-40 ° C to + 60 ° C), will offer up to twice the usable energy, have a 50 times longer life cycle and have charging times that are 100 times faster than typical lead-acid batteries.

Most recently, in March 2021, Vodafone Spain use the flowers to reach its purpose is to be powered by 100% renewable electricity. The company said it had installed a Smartflower solar panel at its Spanish headquarters in Madrid.

According to Boston Globe, until August 2021 about 350 Smartflowers are installed in the United States and 1,800 in Europe. We can assume that this number has only increased since then.
