It is easy to detect hair damage: ends, fractures, dry or brittle texture, extreme frizz, knots that are difficult to brush, dull color, and so on. “You can see and feel the damage, especially on your extremities,” says hair stylist Mark Townsend and Dove’s chief ambassador. Hair damage occurs when attackers — from hair straightening treatments to heat exposure to sun exposure — engage your hair cuticle, leaving cracks on the outside and exposing the inner part of the cuticle. When the cuticle opens, your hair is much more prone to damage and breakage. “It gets weaker and more flexible,” says Townsend of LA, who recently caught up with us in the GP preparation session for the premiere of our new Netflix series. Sex, love and goop.

As we age, our hair can suffer damage. “Our bodies go through hormonal cycles that affect the way our hair grows,” says lead stylist Sally Hershberger, whose New York salon is famous for cutting-edge cutting and color (she also created the Sally Hershberger 24K hair care line). “As these changes age, hair can become thinner, thinner and weaker.” The good news: by making some changes to your hair routine, it’s easy to protect your hair and minimize most damage. Below is everything you need to get your hair smoother, shinier, silkier and healthier, no matter what your age.

Switch to Silk

“Sleeping in a silk pillowcase can make a big difference in your hair,” says Townsend. “Irrista it makes them the most beautiful: they are smooth and smooth and are good for the hair. They help prevent major disorders, which often occur while you sleep. ” Elastic hair, another common culprit for breakage and knots, makes hair much more pleasing when finished with silk. “You can go for a run or a yoga class with your hair tied to your tail, with no indentations, traces or breaks with these silk hair ties,” says goop beauty director Jean Godfrey-June. “One hundred percent they are a miracle. Your hair returns to the pre-workout state as soon as it comes out. And blacks are very stylish. ”

Brush more slowly

Avoid roughly when the hair is in a brittle state (i.e. when it is wet). Go slowly and don’t pull. A British hairdresser created this awesome brush with flexible and forgiving bristles to repair fractures and obstructions (he did it for his wife when she was growing hair after an illness). It works wonders on the intricate and feels amazing on the scalp as well.

Treat your extremities

“I’m obsessed with the new GOOPGLOW hair serum treatment; it’s a terrific multi-tasking,” says Townsend. “Put it on twenty minutes before the shower, especially before an explosion (it helps protect you from the heat), and you’ll see a big difference.” Townsend also likes to use a few drops of hair serum as a treatment to touch the ends throughout the day. “It gives the hair a boost of shine and smooths the frizz,” she says.

Skip a shampoo

Hershberger says one of the biggest mistakes people make is washing their hair too often. “Excessive shampoo removes the necessary natural oils from the hair, leaving the hair dehydrated and brittle, which can cause breakage, scratches and frizz,” she says. Try to reduce the amount of hair you wash, and when you do, avoid shampoos with harsh surfactants that make your hair feel “clean”. Instead, shampoos made with nourishing oils — goop’s salt-scrub shampoo with moringa and rosehip oils, Rahua’s color-protecting shampoo with Rahua and morete oils, and Sangre de Fruta’s botanical shampoo with camellia seed and geranium oils — keep hair shiny. they help. , elastic and intense.

When air can dry out

“Continuous exposure to high temperatures can alter hair strands made of a protein called keratin,” says Hershberger. “If keratin is constantly exposed to direct heat, it eventually becomes weak and brittle. Even limiting your heat style to a few a week instead of a daily one can make a big difference. ”The trick to minimizing GP damage is to air dry your hair, then iron the empty pieces or frizz.

Use a towel made for your hair

Townsend and Hershberger recommend switching to a microfiber towel. “Hair is very brittle when it’s wet, so wrapping your regular bath towel around your hair is a great idea,” says Hershberger. “The fabric of these towels can be heavy and this can break your hair.”

Townsend agrees: “Cotton towels also tend to have small loops of fabric that bind your hair, which causes more damage.”

Space Out Coloring Appointments

Whether you’re highlighting, doubling, touching the roots, or covering up gray, treating your hair chemically causes damage. “To leave the color on your hair, the colored formula needs to open the cuticle, which has a higher risk of damaging the hair,” says Townsend. A solution for dark hair: The temporary color of French colorist Christophe Robin does not open the cuticle at all, so it does not harm the typical hair color formulas and lasts about seven shampoos.

Another option, if you want to manage grays, is this daily supplement made from high potency B vitamins (including biotin) to keep your hair healthy and maintain healthy hair pigmentation over time.
