The Apple A16 Chipset can be built with 4nm Process

According to a recent report, it was recommended due to technical issues, TSMC Apple’s 2022 chipsets may not be able to be manufactured using the 3nm process. It was widely expected that Apple’s 2022 chipsets for its iPhones and iPads could be built on a smaller scale, but that doesn’t seem to be happening anymore.

Instead, a report from DigiTimes (paywall) suggests that Apple could use TSMC’s 4nm process for the A16 chipset that could find its way into the new year’s iPhones and iPads. While it’s not the huge jump from 5nm to 3nm that many had hoped for, it’s a small system and should offer some improvements.

Therefore, we must be skeptical of this report. That’s because according to MacRumors, they refer to it a TSMC press release which the company calls “N4P” and calls it the “three major enhancements” of the company’s 5nm process. That means there’s a chance it’s not a 4nm process, but an upgrade and improvement of the 5nm process that Apple used for the past few generations A-series.

If this is the case, while we can probably expect improved performance and usability on the A16, it probably wouldn’t have been a difficult task if it had been built on the 3nm process, but the either way the long wait on the iPhone. 14, so take with a little salt.
