The United Kingdom has approved the world’s first antiviral pill for COVID-19, developed by Merck and Ridgeback Biotherapeutics, report from Reuters reveals. Unlike vaccines produced against COVID-19, which are preventive measures, the new antiviral pill is effective after the onset of symptoms.
The Medicines and Health Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has approved the medicine, which will be labeled Lagevrio in the UK. The Agency recommends that the medicine be used as soon as possible after a positive COVID-19 test and that it is effective for up to five days after the onset of symptoms.
