The discovery of the planes is nothing more than a light or laser show around a styrofoam and fiberglass structure, says the startup of Hermeus planes. So to unveil its own prototype hypersonic aircraft, the company gave the audience a real feel for the aircraft after launching at full throttle. Here’s a short video from what happened at the event.
According to its website, Hermeus was founded in 2018 with the sole purpose of introducing hypersonic travel in commercial flights. Traveling at five times the pace of current aircraft, the startup wants not only to move people faster, but also to contribute to global economic growth. He estimates that hypersonic travel will add $ 4 trillion to the global economy each year.
Earlier in August, Hermeus found a partner and investor in the US Air Force to secure the launch. a $ 60 million grant, in addition to support from the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). According to the company’s chief operating officer, Skyler Schuford, the Hermeus team, made its hypersonic concept to a prototype in four months.
The prototype, called the Quarterhorse, is not designed to fly, but has all the components of its hypersonic engine. Hermeus uses the GE J85 turbojet engine as a model to create a combined cycle turbine engine (TBCC). We see the applications of similar technology in hypersonic missileshowever, Hermeus plans to make the world’s fastest reusable aircraft. The partnership with the Air Force also suggests that Hermeus technology can also be used to develop military aircraft.
The long-hull aircraft shown in the video does not have a landing gear or any of the flight systems to show off, so much development around the flight is still underway. Previously, press releases used “autonomous” to describe their aircraft, so the company may even have this to show next time. Interestingly, it is not very far. Flight tests are reported to begin early next year.
