In July 2021, the world faced one of the largest ransomware attacks in history.
All the companies affected had one thing in common. Their IT infrastructure was managed with network management and remote control software developed by Kaseya in the US.
The hackers exploited more than 1,500 businesses using zero-day exploits in the Kaseya software used by cybersecurity companies, giving them full access to all the devices these companies manage.
Upon learning of the operation, Kaseya warned customers to immediately shut down the server. The company’s cloud service, believed to be unaffected, was left offline as a precaution.
Cybersecurity expert and creator ReachOut Technology, Rick Jordan, says this can be completely avoided, and has a mission to prevent it from happening again.
ReachOut Technology was also attacked by hackers who were trying to exploit software vulnerabilities that were running on local servers in their company’s data center. But his team identified the threat and shut it down in less than four minutes.
“Ultimately, it’s because most people who provide cybersecurity aren’t qualified. I think they think they know what they’re doing, but it’s true most do not. And that puts the customer in a very vulnerable position, ”Jordan explained.
Jordan has extensive training from industry and government agencies such as the National Security Agency and the Central Intelligence Agency. He says cybersecurity is a complex area. It requires extensive ongoing training, as well as a very creative mindset.
“Cybersecurity professionals obviously need to understand how hardware and software work at a very deep level, but they also need to understand psychology. That’s because 98 percent of hackers first sustain it through social engineering, ”he said.
Social engineering is a term that describes psychological manipulation to gain access to data, systems, and locations. And it’s surprisingly effective because most people don’t know what to look for.
In other words, a typical person is very sensitive to social engineering and a typical business has little cybersecurity. Along with the tremendous rise in cyberattacks (especially organized crime and hostile nations), it is clear that consumers, businesses, and our economy as a whole are at tremendous risk.
It wants to change that by bringing business-level cybersecurity to the average user.
“Cybersecurity is difficult and expensive because it requires a large team of highly skilled and highly specialized technicians. The average computer company can’t pay the employees who have to do it properly, ”he explained.
This is matched by Peter Bookman, a series entrepreneur and cybersecurity expert.
Bookman is the founder and CEO of the company guardiaDog.ai, A company that protects cable and Wi-Fi networks against threats from the “Edge Territory” – on attached devices outside the perimeter of the network or where other solutions cannot be seen, including many IoT devices that currently take home and business. networks such as digital bells, smart refrigerators and gaming systems.
He says, “Many companies with employees who work from home through VPN connections thought they were secure. Although many VPN connections are secure, a personal device can now contain malware that travels to the company, ironically, through a secure VPN. Or worse, family VPNs. if it makes a permanent connection to the network, any device connected to the Internet on the family network will now also be able to access the company ‘s server. “
Imagine the shock when an organization’s security audit reveals 14 unknown Internet connections, and after correcting all 14, finds an additional threat on the conference room desk as a “spy pen” connected to the Internet.
This shows how easy it is for non-computer devices to create additional threats that most people would never consider.
Rick Jordan intends to address this growing cybersecurity threat on a scale through consolidation.
His recently launched cybersecurity company, ReachOut Technology, is making a massive purchase. The company is buying computer and cybersecurity companies that generate between $ 500,000 and $ 5 million to build a virtual army of cybersecurity experts, and then take advantage of economies of scale to provide corporate cybersecurity to the masses.
He says he has never done that.
Others are noticing. Speaking at an industry event among 4,000+ cybersecurity experts, the concept sparked great interest. And outsiders are also seeing the opportunity. Kevin Harrington is the pioneer of the information ad and the star of Shark Tank is one of them. He recently partnered with Jordan to bring out the public company and expand its reach.
Harrington said: “I’ve always been able to spot ideas before they came up with great ideas, and when Rick came to me with this, I knew he was going to be the winner. Every day, we all become more proficient with technology, and we face more and more threats every day. That will not change. So a company that can fix that will do very well in the market. That’s why I put my money and brand behind the concept. ”
It is clear that as technology plays a growing role in our lives, so will the risks we face as a result. So it’s clear that we need to do something to protect ourselves and our businesses.
Jordan believes he has that solution, and so far, many seem to agree.
