Elon Musk Student Awards Gives $ 250,000 for Seaweed-Based Carbon Capture

Funded by Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, XPrize for carbon removal‘s $5 million of the total $ 100 million the cash prize was awarded to 23 projects ranging from direct air capture systems to seaweed cultivation in old oil rigs.

The awards aim to inspire and encourage students who are focused on climate issues from around the world. 195 teams from 44 countries competed with their projects in the Student Awards, aimed not only at capturing carbon from the air, but also the opportunity to store it for at least 100 years.

Competitors’ statements include details of the technologies they have devised or ideas they have devised to persuade panel of judges on the scientific basis of their projects and that they have the know-how to carry out their plans.

There were some interesting ideas among competitors, including directly capturing carbon from the air and combining it with mine tailings for easy storage and turning biomass into a solution to prevent carbon emissions as waste rots.

Blue symbiosis, a competitor from the University of Tasmania, aims to use the properties of carbon dioxide-absorbing algae to remove carbon from the atmosphere, restore oceans and use accumulated carbon, using algae as a building material as fire-resistant bricks. The project focuses on unused oil and gas platforms as agricultural sites to help tackle a problem totaling up to $ 44 billion for infrastructure decommissioning.

Another competitor CyanoCapture from the University of Oxford has a plan to capture carbon in the long run by using a genetically modified bacterium called cyanobacteria, which is expected to capture three times more carbon than normal bacteria.

Of the 23 teams selected as winners, five were awarded $$ 100,000 each for their measurement, reporting and verification technologies. while the other 18 teams were awarded $250 thousand for their demonstrations of carbon removal, to develop their projects and technologies and increase their competitiveness in the next round of the competition.

C $With 95 million left in stock, the main race Carbon Removal XPrize awaits its champions. If you wish to participate, registration is open until December 1 at XPrize website.
