We were posting a list of young innovators For more than two decades now. The list always includes great stories of young people working to harness technology to make the world a better place, but beyond that, it’s a way for us to showcase technologies that are likely to play a huge role in all of our lives in the years to come.

You’ve probably heard of many of our picks over the years – Andrew Ng, Helen Greiner, Ving Zhang, Neha Narkidi, Ian Goodfellow, Stephanie Lampkin, Julie Shah, Joey Polamoini. Many of these distinguished scholars, entrepreneurs, humanitarians, and entrepreneurs list the honor of their choice prominently on their resumes.

What makes a great candidate for our 35 innovators list? We are looking for people doing interesting work in all areas of technology – biotechnology, artificial intelligence, robotics, computing, energy, electronics, software, nanomaterials, and the Internet. Sometimes our winners are the inventors. Other winners are entrepreneurs who use technology in a new or interesting way, and others work to use technology to correct social injustice or make life easier for people living in difficult circumstances.

We would like to see a definite achievement. We would like to be able to answer questions like: What is the innovation here? What has this person achieved that hasn’t been done before in exactly this way? How does this person solve a major technical problem that could make a huge difference in people’s lives?

Yes, many of our candidates come from elite research universities or top companies, but this is not a requirement. We also like to feature inventors, startup founders, and social activists who are using technology in innovative ways to make a difference in their communities.
