How 90 years of engineering has made tires quieter and more efficient

Redesign the wheel and make it better.

“Don’t invent the wheel,” as the old saying goes, and it makes sense. Unless, of course, you intend to learn more about wheels.

The basic tire we all know is a relatively recent invention that involves a tremendous amount of careful engineering, and has been “rediscovered” and transformed many times over the last 70 years. Since they are there just to make the cars roll, you would think they would be quite simple and boring. However, they can be incredibly interesting, as there are even some advanced futuristic tires that are almost indestructible. For example, in this YouTuber video Andrew Lam, you can see how scientists have found out how ingenious adjustments to the shape of the tread make the tires significantly quieter.

However, the wheel has long been a symbol of human technical progress, so understanding the history of tires requires knowledge of the evolution of the wheel itself. If you want to learn more about their fascinating history, great tire designs and the engineering behind them, be sure to watch the video embedded above, and as always, enjoy.
