Winter Skin Tips from a Senior Dermatologist

Whether you’re in the midst of snow magic or the dry air in your indoor heater, winter is rarely the easiest time for your skin. But a few fairly simple changes to your routine (changing your washing detergent, layering your skin care) can help build (and better maintain) your skin moisture. Robert Anoli, NYC’s leading dermatologist, says his patients see dry, sad and even more irritating skin at this time of year; here, she shares tips that keep her skin healthy and happy no matter what the weather throws at us. “Combine cold wind and almost no moisture in the air and you’ll get a prescription for your skin’s lack of moisture,” says Anoli, a dermatologist at the Laser & Skin Surgery Center in New York and one. Swap the washing machine

Switching to a mild detergent can make a real difference in your skin sensation, especially because dry skin is more vulnerable to irritation. “Many people who suffer from skin irritations are relieved when they switch to a detergent that does not smell or be irritated,” says Anoli. Switch with Gentler Cleanser

“Soaps that remove long hot showers and natural oils are the main factors that dry out your skin in the winter,” says Anoli. “Take fewer showers or baths, less heat. Tip 3:

Exfoliate regularly

It may seem intuitive, but exfoliating is a key step in hydrating: when you gently cleanse dead cells, fresh skin cells can emerge and the skin can also absorb the moisturizer better. “If your skin is very dry, exfoliate more slowly and less and continue with plenty of moisturizers.”

Tip 4:

Start with Serum

Anoli likes serums as a base layer. “A serum is a thin liquid that is absorbed, giving it beneficial ingredients in the skin,” he says. “Skin products should generally be applied consistently, from the thinnest to the thickest, so use a serum first.” The serums moisturize a bit, but it’s best to continue with richer oils or creams.
