Inspired by the Skoda Electric Moon Rover Concept, it uses puncture-resistant tires

Cars in space are not a completely new idea – just ask Elon Musk. But Xtend Design makes sure the Earth’s automotive legacy is not lost in the shuffle as humanity expands its presence to the stars.

The company unveiled the concept of an electric lunar rover during an event in the Czech Space Week earlier this month. The vehicle, called Luniaq, is based on NASA’s MMSEV (Multi-Mission Space Exploration Vehicle) platform and draws its inspiration from Skoda Enyaq. It’s easy to see the echo of Skoda’s graceful but angular design themes in the rover concept.

The electric vehicle was designed by Tomas Rousek, a space architect at Xtend who previously worked at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory for conceptual missions to the moon and Mars.

“We would like to inspire people on how we can continue to progressively develop our technologies and one day live and drive in places other than Earth,” Rusek said. in a statement.

The car uses a puncture resistant Tweel tire technology from Michelin and its large windows will be made of clear aluminum, making them more durable than glass when faced with things like flying debris and micrometeorites.

The polyethylene layers will do the job of protecting the astronauts from radiation, and the stereoscopic cameras mounted on top of the vehicle will explore the terrain and support its autonomous operation.

It also includes a “suit” at the rear of the rover that allows astronauts to enter their suits directly without risking dust or other particles entering the cabin. Solid state batteries power the car and can be recharged through solar panels on the roof.

Everyone can guess whether the design will go into production or not, but it is encouraging to see that the world is showing serious enthusiasm for establishing positions in space.
